52 Weeks of Personal History & Genealogy: Week #25 – Neighbors

Neighbors is a concept that has definitely changed over time! I remember going to visit my grandparents when I was a child and they knew who their neighbors were and could (and did) tell all about their families and everything going on in their lives. My Great-Grandfather Stout could go to the local grocery store and tell you who was in the store based on the cars in the parking lot!

Now, I live in a house in a nice neighborhood and I have spoken to a couple of my neighbors and I wave to them as I am driving down the street but I don’t really know any of them. I don’t think I have really known any of my neighbors in the last twenty years!

When I was a girl and we lived in Green Forest, I knew several of our neighbors and spent a lot of time with the neighborhood children. I also spent a lot of time with the neighborhood children when I was little and we lived on Berry Street in Springdale but since then I don’t even remember who my neighbors were at the places we have lived.

Today, I don’t really feel the need to get to know my neighbors well. I think the people we work with and the people who belong to the same organizations and clubs have replaced our neighbors in our lives.

Week #25 – Neighbors

Week 25. Neighbors. Who were your childhood neighbors? Have you kept in touch with any of them? Do you feel the concept of “neighbors” has changed since then?

This challenge runs from Saturday, June 18, 2011 through Friday, June 24, 2011.

52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History by Amy Coffin is a series of weekly blogging prompts (one for each week of 2011) that invite genealogists and others to record memories and insights about their own lives for future descendants. You do not have to be a blogger to participate. 52 Weeks of Personal History & Genealogy: Week #24 – Clothes

Well, I am a little late with this post but here it is anyway. When I was a kid, I mostly wore jeans and t-shirts and that really hasn’t changed much through the years. I still mostly wear jeans. I have never really been in-style much and I mostly don’t care! I did do the parachute pants and the leg warmers during their in-style periods in the 80s but then I kept wearing the leg-warmers and slouch socks for long after they were out of style because they were comfortable!

I tend to wear what is comfortable not necessarily what is in-style! I do love boots and they happen to be in style right now but then again I wore them for years when they weren’t really in-style. Comfort is the main thing I look for in clothes!

Week #24 – Clothes

Week 24. Clothes. What types of clothes did you wear as a child? What was “in fashion” and did your style compare?. What types of clothes did you wear as a child? What was “in fashion” and did your style compare?

52 Weeks of Personal History & Genealogy: Week #22 – Secrets

I don’t have a whole of secrets. I tend to be a pretty open person. But there are lots of things about me that won’t be on any records a 100 years from now.

I am a romantic at heart! I want the happy ending to the book or movie but I am also a lover of the crime shows and have a pretty realistic attitude about life. There are plenty of bad people and bad things do happen to good people but I choose to focus on the good things. Enough bad things will happen anyway there is no need to give them any more time than necessary!

I am a night owl! I tend to stay up until late at night and then sleep until noon or after if left to my own devices. However, I am an adult with responsibilities so I have to go to bed at least at a somewhat reasonable time so I can get up to go to work!

I love romantic comedy movies but I won’t watch a horror movie! Even the mild ones tend to stay with me and I can’t stop thinking about them forever!

Week #22 – Secrets

Week 22. Secrets. Describe something about yourself that won’t be found on any record 100 years from now.

52 Weeks of Personal History & Genealogy: Week #23 – Books

I am an avid reader! I have read since I was a very young child. When I was very young, I read the Laura Ingles Wilder series about Little House on the Prairie.

I have also always loved mystery books! I read most of the Agatha Christie novels! I like the Sherlock Holmes series of books. When I was younger, I read the Nancy Drew series too.

I also like biographies and true stories. I have read most of the books written about Presidents Kennedy and Lincoln and the events surrounding their assassinations. I read the books about the latest true crimes that make the news.

When I was a teenager, I started reading romance novels and I was hooked. I still read them. I usually read at least two or three a week. My current favorite authors include Lynnsay Sands, Nora Roberts, Diana Palmer, Julia Quinn and others! I usually read a novel in about an hour and a half. I especially like the books that are part of a series – I like the story to continue from one book to another so the characters become more real!

Week #23 – Books

Week 23. Books. What was your favorite book, or who was your favorite author from your childhood? What do you like to read now? Books or other formats?
