The Book of Me, Written by You: Prompt 40 – Where do you think?

Actually one of the places I do most of my thinking and weighing of pros and cons is when I am driving to and from work! This may not be so good for the other drivers but that is when it will often happen. I will be singing along with the radio and find the solution to the spreadsheet problem I have been working on all afternoon!

When I just want to relax and think back to fond memories or get over a bad day or week, I will get in a hot bubble bath with a book and relax for a while but I don’t seem to do much serious thinking there.

When I really want to think, I just go for a long drive by myself – although with gas prices the way they are today those have had to get shorter!

This week’s prompt is – Where do you think?

How do you record those thoughts?
Or don’t you?
Does thinking happen when you are in the bath, on the settee?
Where do you go or what to you do when you need to seriously think of something?

The Book of Me, Written by You

By Julie Goucher 2012 – Anglers Rest Blog – http://www.anglersrest.net

Introduction

The Book of Me is a themed event enabling you to build a “Book of Me” over at least the coming year to share with your descendants, in reality this project can be as long
or as short as you want it to be.

So much of our time is researching our ancestors, but how much of the incidentals of our lives do we share, or know about our parents, grandparents, siblings and the
people that matter to us?

It is these incidental snippets that enable us to “flesh out” our ancestors and what more of a legacy could we present to our descendants or future researchers?

Over the coming weeks there will be a weekly prompt enabling you to share those details and perhaps include details of things that you know of your parents, Grandparents, siblings etc

This is not just about genealogy or family history. It is about a personal journey; a journey of rediscovery of yourself and perhaps your loved ones through your eyes.

The Book of Me, Written by You: Prompt 33 – Regrets

I have made many choices in my life that if I knew now what I didn’t know then I don’t know if I would have made the same decisions. However, I don’t really regret any of the big decisions I have made. I try to remember that changing any decision in the past could have dramatically altered my life of today. I am in a pretty happy place in my life. Do I sometimes wish there were some things different? Doesn’t everyone wonder about the Road Not Taken?! But I try to keep in mind that if I had taken the road not taken then this would be the Road Not Taken. Who knows where I would have ended up.

I like my life as it is now and I am happy with the person I have become. Am I perfectly satisfied? No but then if you are perfectly satisfied you have nothing to get up for in the morning. I learned a long time ago that life is a precious gift. I try not to stress over the little things and remember that the things I thought were so important a few years ago are not even in the realm of the things I think are important now. That deadline missed a few years ago – nothing much happened in the world because of it. The world didn’t end because I quit that job that some others thought I should be overjoyed to have but that I hated. In fact, quitting that job turned out to lead to the job I have now and I am the happiest I have ever been.

Now that is not to say that sometimes I don’t forget my own advice and do stress out over the little soon to be forgotten “Oh so important cannot wait things”. But I do try to remember these things will soon pass away too.

To Everything There is a Season
There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven– A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.…

This week’s prompt is – Regrets

  • Big Regrets
    • I should (or not) have bought that large purchase
  • Small Regrets
    • I should (or not) have had that thick shake at MacDonalds
  • Miscellaneous Regrets
    • Relationships
    • Jobs
    • Friends

This might seem like a prompt which gives you permission to beat yourself up at the regrets you may have. That is not the case. The important thing to remember with regrets is that hindsight is a wonderful thing!

The Book of Me, Written by You: Prompt 32 – How do you de-stress?

072214_0338_BookofMeWri1

I don’t have any magic secrets to de-stressing but I have found that getting away from the stressful situation for a while is always a big help if possible. Sometimes, even if I can’t leave the situation physically, I can escape into a good book for a while and that seems to help.

After I have had a stressful week, sometimes I like to take a long bubble bath and read a paperback while soaking in hot water with lavender bubbles. This doesn’t work as well as it used to because now I rarely have a new book to take to the bath with me. I buy all my books on my tablet and use the kindle reader now and I am not taking my tablet into the bath! That would surely lead to more stress!!!

Music and a long drive are a help sometimes too. I have about an hour’s commute each day so I turn on the radio to my favorite channels or use a playlist on my phone and sing along with my favorite songs. This can be helpful pretty much any day. (Although I sometimes get looks from other drivers who seem to think I am talking to myself but oh well!)

This week’s prompt is – How do you De-Stress?

  • Read
  • Swim
  • Walk
  • Music
  • Yoga
  • Sport
  • Anything else?
  • What triggers your acknowledgement that you need to de-stress?
    • Headaches
    • other pains?
  • What triggers you stress?
As always, share what you feel comfortable – anything from nothing to…..your choice!

The Book of Me, Written by You: Prompt 09 – Halloween

When we were kids we did the trick or treating that is mostly unknown to kids today. It is just too dangerous now for the kids to go to other peoples’ houses if the parents don’t really know the people who live in the homes.

During the years that we lived in Springdale, Mom and Dad would always take us to both sets of grandparents and when we visited Grandma and Grandpa Thompson we would walk up the street and see Great Grandpa Stout and Great-Aunt Mabel (Stout) Parsons who lived next door to Great-Grandpa Stout. Then, we would go to all the houses on Brogdon Street because Grandpa Stout, as I always called him, knew all the people on the street. In fact, for most of them he could tell you who their parents and grandparents were and their children and grandchildren if they had any.

Our costumes were usually costumes bought at Wal-Mart a day or two before Halloween and worn over our regular clothes because it always seemed to be really cold on Halloween night. I don’t really remember specifically what they were.

By the end of the night we would usually have a big bag full of candy! If we were lucky, one of the Grandmas would have made caramel apples or popcorn balls for us!

Now, I have seen my niece and nephews costumes for several years and they usually come by for the bag of candy I make for them every year.

This week’s prompt is Halloween

Have you ever participated in a Halloween event?
When was it?
Where was it?
What did you dress as?
Trick or treat?

The Book of Me, Written by You: Prompt 08 – Time Capsule

My time capsule would be for the grandchildren of my niece and nephews and the generations to follow them. I would want them to know about not only my life and the lives of my parents and grandparents but of the preceding generations as well.

I was lucky enough to know some of my great-grandparents and to hear some stories of their parents and even of their grandparents. I want to make sure that those are not lost to those that follow me. I would put the family history books that I am currently writing in my time capsule. I am trying to make my family history book a story of our family and not just a lot of names and dates – although of course those are in the book. But I want it make the people seem like real people.

We all have our hopes and dreams, our struggles and triumphs, our good times and bad, and I want to show those not just the info to be found on the tombstones. I want to fill in the dash on the tombstones because as someone once said the dash is what became of the life of the person. The dash is the pages of the book while the birth and death dates are just the covers.

The prompt is Time Capsule

  1. You can choose who to create the time capsule for as that will influence what you put (or would put into your time capsule)
  2. The creation of a time capsule
    1. you can do this in the literal sense or
    2. you can simply write what you would place into your time capsule and why. It is much more fun to create though!
  • You may choose to create a time capsule for your children, or a niece/nephew, for grandchildren – A physical item that you will give to a named person.
  • Why have you chosen that person and when do you intend for them to have it?
  • You may choose to create a time capsule of your home and leave it for someone in the future to find.
  • You may want to create a time capsule relating to an actual event or anniversary
  • If you create a physical time capsule, what did you choose to use as your capsule and why?
